It doesn't seem so long ago now that I was privy to quite the most exquisite display of stupefied puzzlement. The venue was Ackergill Tower on the north coast of Scotland. I was there to attend the press launch of an estate version of a popular executive saloon. The suit at the front chuntered through a few dry facts about the car, trying desperately to send us to sleep and gloss over one salient point. This estate version actually carried less luggage than the saloon. A collective 'what is the point' rose from the sceptical hacks. Marketing bumf about younger demographics was handed out. Few bought the party line.
