Cost of Ownership
As soon as you start throwing pounds and pence into the argument, the Hyundai i20 Blue makes a strong case for itself. For what it's worth, the 84g/km emissions mean that the car benefits from a full exemption from the London congestion charge. While that will appeal to some, the 88.3mpg combined cycle fuel figure will be of more universal interest. That's much better than the standard 90PS i20 1.4 CRDi, testament to the fuel-saving features fitted to this Blue model. It also means that a tankful of diesel could take you over 750 miles which makes a monthly fill a real possibility. The 84g/km emissions figure means zero rate VED taxation and insurance is inexpensive too. Because it's hardly poster material for young hoons, the i20 Blue offers cheap cover. Residual values for the i20 have held up very well and the low day to day running costs of the i20 Blue, coupled with its modest price premium over the i20 Classic, will ensure you won't lose your shirt on one.

Summary
Most eco cars are distinctly uninspiring things. At first glance it would be easy to lump the Hyundai i20 in with them, but this is a car that gets better with closer inspection. It's worth taking the time to get to know the i20 Blue. Yes, the numbers it makes are predictably virtuous but less obvious is the subtle way it makes the most of its interior space, the honest, direct feel of its controls and the surprising ingredient that it's actually quite good fun to drive. Factor in Hyundai's excellent five year warranty, roadside assistance and health checks package and you end up with a car that's just too good to be ignored. It'll never be the most exciting car in this price bracket, but if you'd like to cut your day to day motoring bills but not be continually reminded of the fact, the Hyundai i20 Blue is as smart a pick as any.
