The Volkswagen Golf GTI Concept has more attitude than a moody teenager. Want
proof? Instead of tidying its bedroom, this hot-hatch has been showing-off its 2.0-litre
petrol engine at the Paris Motor Show. This produces 220PS and 350Nm of torque, which
propels the moody youngster to 62mph in 6.6 seconds and on to 153mph. This power
plant – in future production form - could be teamed with either six-speed manual or DSG
transmission. The latter enables motorists to cruise in full-automatic mode, or select
the gears manually without a foot operated clutch. That is tremendous. Furthermore,
the 'Performance Pack' increases power – and attitude – by 10PS, to 230PS.
This
reduces the 0-62 time to 6.5 seconds and increases the maximum speed to 155mph. This
trim has larger brakes too, plus a front axle differential lock that reduces power related
under-steer.
The all-new Volkswagen Golf GTI Concept has striking looks too. This – the teenager
claims – could be ruined if it helped with housework. We can see its point. Highlights
include the: bright red brake callipers, honeycomb grille, smoked LED rear lights, chrome
tailpipes, tartan sports seats, flat bottomed steering wheel, and red ambience lighting that
pays homage to its predecessors. These complement the variable rate power steering
which minimises the movement required for parking, and helps the car feel direct on faster
roads. Throw-in a start/stop system to minimise fuel consumption, rock-solid build quality,
and a sky high image and it becomes clear why the Golf GTI has tons of attitude. Kids, ey.
