BMW i8 Claims Top Gear Title

Top Gear Magazine Honours BMW i8

The BMW i8 has been crowned Top Gear Magazine’s Global Car of the Year 2014.

The i8 is a 2-door coupé that represents a generational leap in motoring. It is one the first high performance plug-in hybrids - one of the first to blend speed with very low fuel consumption and emissions. Its futuristic performance complements futuristic styling.

The BMW i8 – which has 4-wheel-drive to maximise traction - is powered by a 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor. Combined these produce 362hp, 570Nm of torque and propel it to 62mph in 4.4 seconds. Top speed is 155mph.

Despite its performance, this 6-speed automatic averages – on paper – 134.5mpg and its carbon emissions are 49g/km. The Ford Fiesta 1.25-litre Studio, in contrast, averages 54.3mpg, produces carbon at the rate of 120g/km, and takes 16.9 seconds to hit 62mph.

Top Gear Editor Discusses BMW i8 Award

Charlie Turner, Editor in Chief at Top Gear Magazine, said: “The BMW is a milestone in the annals of automotive history and a glorious statement for an exciting and positive future”.

“The i8 delivers – and then some. It’s the kind of car we should celebrate, a beautiful vision of the future delivered now. It is a resounding success for the BMW i8 and the whole team were unanimous in naming the BMW i8 as Top Gear magazine’s Car of the Year.”

BMW Discuss Top Gear Award

Dr Ian Robertson, BMW AG Management Board Member for Sales and Marketing, added: “We always knew the i8 was going to be a game changing vehicle and the strength of orders shows just how desirable this car is for customers. Prestigious awards such as this one from Top Gear magazine prove that it has global recognition within the industry too.”

looks like another very expensive bmw bone-shaker

Ross Needham , you should have gone to 'Specsavers' mate !!

Perhaps we have to start with the high powered models (?) BUT I for one would be more impressed with a plug in hybrid that has a combined power of around 100bhp, a decent range on battery alone and of course a really small ICE so there is no range anxiety!

I notice amongst the many and numerous statistics quoted in the comparison to a Ford Fiesta, the only one that really matters to most of us (the £price), has been omitted. Wonder why?

Another terrible looking BMW!!

RESPECT .... BMW leads again with the futuristic driving machine!

Amazing looking car!

Kudos Stephen Turvil!
