Drink Driving Accidents rise for first time in ten years

Figures revealed show that deaths and serious injuries from accidents that have involved drink driving have risen for the first time in a decade. There were 280 fatalities last year compared with 250 in 2010 while serious injuries rose to 1290 from 1250.

The rise in drink drive casualties follows a drop in 2010, when drink drive fatalities were at their lowest in thirty years. The Institute of Advanced Motorists' chief executive Simon Best said "any rise in drink drive casualties is worrying, with 15% of all road fatalities involving a drink driver there is clearly more to be done to reduce casualties. The problem is many crashes occur the morning after, there needs to be more education on the effects of driving after drinking. A heavy night drinking could leave you over the limit the morning after. The message to all drivers is don't drink and drive."

The road safety charity, BRAKE, said "we are calling on the government to take decisive action on this major killer, including a zero tolerance drink drive limit, to send out a clear message that it's none for the road, and greater priority given to traffic policing, so we have more police carrying out life-saving enforcement." There is a concern with a zero tolerance limit as a limit of zero alcohol in the blood sounds good, but if you eat any food that ferments, small amounts of alcohol will be found in the blood, so the limit cannot be literally zero.

Causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drink or drugs carries an average sentence of 4.35 years. Fines for drink driving are lower in real terms than they were ten years ago. In 2001 the average fine for drink driving was £203, the average £240 fine in 2011 was equivalent to just £178 in 2001 prices which is a 12.3% decrease.

Again headlines but little substance, and no facts. Heavy drinking and driving in this country is in the past, most drivers have the odd beer and then a soft drink or two, the low limit of 80mg has hastened the demise of the English country pub. The authorities will not produce any real facts, and I think that many so called drunk drivers are only just over the minuscule limit which will unfortunately earn them the label drunk, and the authorities make it appear that it is rife throughout the country. Many of the drivers who actually cause accidents I am willing to bet, will have taken drugs along with alcohol, and I do not think the police check for other substances. I would like to know of how many drivers arrested are serial offenders, and how many are immigrants, I would also love to see a graph of where most accidents and arrests were made because I don't think there will be very many incidents in the smaller towns and villages in our country, if I drive past my house which is on a main road at 22:00 I am one easy to observe intermittent driver, its much easier to risk drink or drug driving in a city where a driver is just one of thousands. To lift the average all the plod need to do is a concentrated blitz on a city, but without publishing the facts it just looks bad for all the country.

As someone who has worked with over 22000 convicted Drink Drivers perhaps people may be interested in a few thoughts I have decided to publish

@David I really don't think that the drink drive limit is the cause of pub's closing and it's certainly no argument for not lowering the limit further. It's known that any alcohol will slow a driver's response time down so why wouldn't you support a lowering or a no alcohol limit? I agree more police enforcement is the key, along with tougher penalties. Not just for drink driving but for the morons who think they can use a mobile phone to text while they're driving. An instant 3 year ban and a requirment for these idiots to take their test again may well drive the message home.

The issue is education. People need reminding constantly about the effects of alcohol and spurts of advertising as a knee jerk reaction to death figures is not enough. We seem to do this in the UK and it is not an effective strategy when there are new drivers on the roads daily. The most memorable campaigns in my opinion were the 'In the Summertime' song which has the lyrics 'have a drink have a drive'and the Dennis Leary 'What an a**hole'. Both were talked about a lot at the time and made an impact.

For those calling for zero tolerance, I say this; many more people are killed by sober drivers than drunks. Shit happens my friends, and if you want to eliminate death, avoid birth. Hysterical responses to tragedy are understandable, but rarely yield common sense.

When we are given these statistics, what we never hear is the amount a drunk driver is over the legal limit, but I think we can guess that it is considerably more than 80mg. In consideration of this, any call for a reduction in the limit or zero tolerance is nonsense. The problem lies not in the current limit, but in the lack of police patrol vehicles on the road. The investment in speed cameras has allowed the government to cut police numbers and the police have become lazy, as a speeding conviction has the same weight as any other crime and improves performance figures. The current alcohol limit has already contributed to the ruination of British social life and the closing of thousands of pubs, and a zero limit will drive home the final nail in the coffin of British social life.

My daughter got run over by a drunk illegal immigrant driving without a license in a car he'd taken without consent. He got a suspended sentance and claimed assylum. He still lives in this country having never worked or contributed anything. He had a similar offence a couple of years later. The state's tolerance was not matched by me when I met him in a local street with some of my fellow squaddies after the sentance was passed. Pesonally anyone that causes damage to another person as a result of being drunk in charge of a vehicle should be treated as having committed Grevious bodily harm at the very least.

There definitely needs to be a ZERO tolerence to drink driving and mugh tougher sentensing and fines. Death caused by drink driving should be treated as murder. Fines need to start at £1000 and driving bans should be for life. Then maybe, that would act as a disincentive to drink and drive.

I think the vast majority of the drivers on the road behave with a responsible attitude towards drinking & driving, especially those in rural areas who have little or no choice when it comes to public transport - so why penalise the sensible ones in favour of the irresponsible minority who persistently break the law? And notwithstanding alcohol related offences; how about even stiffer penalties for those who drive whilst under the influence of class A drugs, who I suspect far outnumber the drink/drivers these days?

It is quite notcable after the weekends that cars that have been driving too fast in a straight line fail to turn when there is a bend and go straight through a wall or hit a house or parked vehicle, this in my opinion is caused largely by "black outs" under the influence of halucogenic drugs, not necessarily alcohol. Can we have figures on each seperately?
