DVLA Auction Helps Motorists Find Personalised Registrations

DVLA Confirms Registration Plate Auction

A DVLA Auction of Personalised Registrations will soon ensure that a wide range of marks become available to the public (May 7th to 9th 2014 at Hellidon Lakes Hotel, Daventry). These include PAT 777E, 6 PLA, I 0WY, 23 0, 25 NY and OFF 333R. Motorists can purchase either in person or via the telephone, the internet, absentee bid or text message. Bidding typically starts – normally within the auction room itself - at a reserve price of (say) £750. The bid then increases in units of £50 while the price is less than £1,000, then by £100 thereafter. The hammer price is then subject to VAT (20%), the Buyers Premium (8% + VAT) and the DVLA Assignment Fee (£80). Payment can be processed online or by credit card, debit card, cheque, etc. 10% is taken on the day of the auction and the balance must be paid within five days. The winning bidder will then receive the Certificate of Entitlement in the post within ten working days. He/she must then present it to a registration plate producer before production can commence. Furthermore, this Certificate has a period of validity that – should the registration mark not be transferred to a vehicle before it expires – can be extended for an additional cost.

Not Every Registration Can Be Transferred To Every Vehicle

Motorists must choose a registration carefully as not every mark can be transferred to every vehicle. The rule is that the age identifier – if present - cannot suggest that the vehicle was registered later than it was, but can suggest it was earlier. The current registration plate format was introduced in 2001 and the age identifier changes every March and September 1st. The March tag coincides with the year, e.g. March 2014 is 14 and March 2013 is 13. The September tag is the year plus 50, e.g. September 2013 is 63 and September 2012 is 62. As such, a car from March 2012 cannot have a 62, 13 or 63 registration but can have 12 or older. There are other registration plate formats too. The 1982 to 2001 structure – which is known as prefix – typically had a new age identifier on  August 1st. This was a letter on the extreme left, i.e. A to Y. For example, A is August 1st 1983 to July 31st 1984 and L is August 1st 1993 to July 31st 1994. From March 1st 1999 to August 31st 2001, however, the identifier changed every March and September in preparation for the current format (T to Y).  Prior to August 1st 1983, the suffix system – that had the age identifier on the extreme right of a plate – also used letters from A to Y.

What a ridiculous price to pay just to be a poser. The government gets a double helping by adding VAT! I'd rather keep my cars anonymous anyway.
