Vettel crossed the line 4.298 seconds ahead of Webber

Sebastian Vettel made a perfect start as Fernando Alonso got past his team-mate in second, Felipe Massa, only for the Spaniard to touch the back of Vettel. This caused damage to his front wing and as sparks flew as he made his way around the lap, Mark Webber was looking to get past the stricken Ferrari. Webber did so and as he came down the main straight, Alonso’s wing went underneath his car and the only way to go was in the gravel trap.

Lewis Hamilton had a great start in his Mercedes and moved up to 3rd, with his former team-mate, Jenson Button just behind him.

Vettel was the first to pit on lap 5, while Lewis Hamilton forgot what team he now drives for and drove into the McLaren pit box. Toro Rosso released their car into the path of a Caterham and when Webber finally pitted and returned to the track, he was 2.9 seconds ahead of Vettel.

Pastor Maldonado had an excursion through the gravel and had to pit his Williams for a new front wing on lap 13.

By lap 18 Webber had a 2.4 second gap over Vettel, but it was Hamilton and Nico Rosberg who were showing they had the pace to battle at the front.

Webber pitted on lap 19, but another problem for the Force India team caused Paul di Resta to have a very long pitstop which pushed him all the way down to 21st and last. A lap later and he had retired in the pits.

At the halfway point, Webber was leading followed by Vettel, Hamilton, Rosberg and Button. Much to Vettel’s annoyance, he was unhappy to be behind his team-mate and made his feelings known on the radio. "Mark is too slow, get him out of the way.”

Jenson Button had a nightmare pitstop on lap 36 when his team hadn’t finished putting on his right front and had sent him on his way. Stopping halfway down the pitlane, his mechanics had to push him back and he rejoined the race in 14th.

A battle between Webber as he exited the pits on lap 44 and Vettel provided some great defending by the Australian. But a lap later and the German, despite being told by his race engineer to be careful, got past Webber around the outside at Turn Four.

It stayed this way to the chequered flag as Vettel crossed the line 4.298 seconds ahead of Webber. Hamilton completed the podium.
