Forecourt update: MINI 5-Door Hatch

What You Need To Know About New MINI 5-Door Hatch

What Is It?

The BMW-built MINI 5-Door Hatch is a more practical version of the recently launched 3-Door Hatch. Most importantly, it has five doors instead of three!

This supermini class vehicle is 161mm longer and 11mm taller than its sibling, so there is 72mm more legroom for rear passengers. It also has 15mm more headroom and a further 61mm width at shoulder height. It has a third rear seat too.

Cargo capacity also rises, by 67-litres to 278-litres. The rear seats can be folded flat to increase boot space to 941-litres.

Furthermore, the extra doors make access to the rear cabin easier, as there is no need to lean a front seat forwards then slide through the gap.

Styling cues inherited from the 3-Door include the circular lights, plus the prominent nose and wing mirrors. It can be finished with one of four solid and nine metallic colours.

What Are The Engine Options?

The new MINI 5-Door Hatch is powered by a range of engines, the: 1.2-litre 102hp (available with One trim), the 1.5-litre 136hp (Cooper), and the 2.0-litre 192hp (Cooper S).

Diesels include the: 1.5-litre 95hp (One D), the 1.5-litre 116hp (Cooper D), and the 2.0-litre 170hp (Cooper SD). 0-62mph times vary from 6.8 to 11.4 seconds and fuel economy from 47.9mpg to 80.7mpg. One and One D engines are not available from launch (October 2014).

What Are The Trim Options?

The 5-Door Cooper and Cooper D have four electric windows, powered mirrors, air-conditioning, front fog lamps and an on-board computer. The Cooper S and SD also benefit from a sports leather steering wheel and higher-end Harman/Kardon stereo. The forthcoming One and One D are the entry-level versions with the lowest specification.

How Much Is It?

The 5-Door Cooper costs £15,900, the Cooper D is £17,050, the Cooper S £19,255 and the Cooper SD £20,050. The One and One D will cost £14,350 and £15,490, respectively.

Anything Else I Need To Know?

The MINI 5-Door is unrecognisable – in terms of safety, refinement and sophistication – to the original Mini from the fifties. It has, however, inherited its style and sense of fun.
