Forecourt Update: New Volkswagen Polo GTI
Volkswagen Launches New Hot-Hatch
What Is it?
The 2015 Volkswagen Polo GTI is a new performance version of the manufacturer's supermini class hot-hatch. It is distinguished from its siblings via the special bumpers, GTI badges, 17” wheels, rear spoiler, duel exhaust pipes and honeycomb grille that incorporates a red stripe. LED lights sit either side of the grille. The cabin has a leather sports steering wheel with red, contrast, stitching.
The Polo GTI sits on sports suspension that is 10mm lower at the front and 15mm lower at the rear than the standard models. Its purpose is to enhance the handling. Sports suspension complements the XDS+ system that minimises the under steer that hampers some high performance, front wheel drive, cars. Finally, the sensitivity of the electronic stability programme can be switched down (not off) so the driver can have a more natural feel on the race track.
What Engine Does It Have?
The 2015 Polo GTI – which is available with 3 or 5 doors - is powered by a 1.8-litre, 192PS, turbocharged petrol engine teamed with 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic transmission. Manual versions produce 320Nm of torque from 1,450 to 4,200 rpm, hit 62mph in 6.7 seconds and average 47.1mpg. Carbon emissions are 139g/km.
Automatic versions enable the motorist to cruise in full auto mode, or select any gear manually without a foot clutch via paddles behind the steering wheel. The manufacturer says that due to “differences in the design parameters of the gearboxes” the automatic models have less torque than the manuals (250Nm between 1,250 and 5,300 rpm). However, the race to 62mph still takes 6.7 seconds. Average fuel consumption is 50.4mpg and emissions 129g/km.
What Equipment Does It Have?
2015 Polo GTI standard equipment includes: Bluetooth with phone connection, a tyre pressure monitor, digital radio, automatic post collision braking system, 2-tone horn, air-conditioning, draws under the front seats, power windows, electric mirrors and a hill-hold function to prevent it rolling backwards on slopes.
Anything Else I Need To Know?
Polo GTI optional extras include the sport performance pack with dynamic chassis control which – Volkswagen says - “offers sportier steering, accelerator response and engine noise inside the car”.
