Fuel Strike Planned

A spokeswoman for the Prime Minister David Cameron said there should be no panic buying for fuel but said “it’s prudent to have contingency plans in place.”

Downing Street has urged businesses and those that rely on their cars to make contingency plans for a fuel haulage strike. A spokeswoman for the Prime Minister David Cameron said there should be no panic buying for fuel but said “it’s prudent to have contingency plans in place.” Asked whether people should go to petrol station forecourts immediately she said “people will draw their own conclusions.”

The cabinet held talks on Tuesday about the possibility of strike action by Unite haulage drivers over Easter, in a dispute about conditions that has rekindled memories of the disruptive fuel strike in 2000. In an interview with the BBC’s Hardtalk programme, Len McCluskey, general secretary of Unite, refused to rule out the possibility that any strike would be held over Easter.

Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude said the government had "learnt the lessons" of the past and stood "ready to act" in case of a walkout. Training of army drivers will begin next week as part of contingency plans being drawn up to avoid major disruption to fuel supplies.Mr Maude said "we are calling on the trade union Unite and the employers involved to work together to reach an agreement that will avert industrial action, widespread strike action affecting fuel supply at our supermarkets, garages and airports could cause disruption across the country. The general public should not and must not suffer from this dispute, and strike action is manifestly not the answer."

Unite said the government should be putting pressure on oil companies.

its time to start taking action on a government that just doesn`t care.i think its time this country stood up to this governent and voted with strike action all this government as thier predecessors are is wolves in sheeps clothing. this action is not the only action been taken lately what about the teachers who too has been unfairly treated over pension rights. (work longer contribute more but get less back- what a joke )amongst many other hard working people who have possibly lost thier jobs/houses. but dont worry as long as the bankers get a nice hefty bonus. remember them the ones that the tax payer bailed out and now he has to dig deep again and pay for thier bonuses f**king disgraceful. just as long as the rich get richer and the poor get poorer its ok.

I agree with others...sack the lot of them, unions cause nothing but disruption! There are thousands of out of work tanker drivers out there, give them jobs, they'll appreciate them!!

all drivers get out and block the roads for a weak and rid of them dick heads in no 10 they dont care about anybody has long as they get there big pay packets.

Does the goverment realise that every time they put fuel tax up,it affects everything we buy.It costs us more to go to work, more on our food costs. as suppliers can no longer absorb the costs. We do not earn what they do and we have to pay our own way. They should come down to our pay and live in the real world!! and if i werea diffrent colour i would get it free from the govenment.but i am white and british

Some of us might be better of on the doll as I would of been of I didn't get a better job that pays more but I still have to put in 60-72 hours a week to cover all my outgoings . The government would be better of if they reduced the tax on fuel there putting a load of small business out of trade as they can't afford the cost of fuel!

I just wish people would stop being so selfish. Folk are stocking up okn fuel - why? so they can go on holiday at easter? so they can continue to 'pop out' at will? So they can get to the supermarket for the big Easter bank holiday shop?.......after all, we all know idiots with siege mentality who panic at the thought of the shops being closed for a few hours...yes, the same ones who panic buy petrol. There are those of us who live in remote places where a car is an absolute essential for getting food, medicine, getting to hospitals and doctors etc - the important things. We have no public transport whatsoever and currently look like being grounded completely in the near future. And as for the government and the media -SHUTUP!!! If you'd all said nothing we'd be none the wiser and this situation would not have arisen. TOTAL MADNESS!

Oh here we go again. Sack them all and get in a whole new batch of drivers that dont belong to a union. There are some 66,000 tanker drivers currently out of work who would be glad to earn a fortune (compared to what they are getting on the dole). So simply sack all the ones that go on strike. The Govt are a bunch of dipsticks anyway and will do anything to grease their own palms. The unions, in my opinion, work for the Govt.....yet again the Govt will make money from us. We will have higher this and higher that to pay for the use of the army drivers and to pay for the upcoming fuel increases. Yep, I say stuff the drivers who strike and stuff the Govt as they are just a big bunch o Jessies!!!!

I'm hoping everyone doesn't think the Government don't realise the impact raising fuel taxes is having on all other services. I think you will find that's the plan! Government spending is out of control and has been for a long time. They need to supplement that income from somewhere and why not hit the one thing everyone relies on. Now they pretend to be the knight in shining armour and act for the good of the people to protect our interests...... If they reduce taxes on fuel people can afford to spend more on fuel and therefore would provide a bigger bank balance. Sorry, my voice doesn't count, we are clearly in a diluted democracy.

why should a minority be allowed to affect the majority, i struggle to make ends meet with no chance of a pay rise (again) but do not have the luxury of being able to go on strike. it does not hinder the ones at the root cause just the average person on the street. the Government do not live in the real world they award themselves massive payrises when everyone else are told to stop or reduce pay rises, the don't have to pay for fuel, tax or insurance as they have a car provided for them and they claim more than my annual wage on expenses alone. where is the fairness or justice in that. our armed forces are not a toy you can keep getting out of the box to save you when you make mistakes, they are already over streched from all the other mistakes and paying for them with their lives.
