Honda is ‘most reliable used brand’

What Car? and Warranty Direct research reveals that Honda is the most reliable used car brand in the UK for the seventh consecutive year. Honda has an enviable reliability record, with just a one in 10 chance of cars suffering a breakdown in any given 12-month period. Toyota and Lexus are close behind in the league table.

Warranty Direct’s managing director, Duncan McClure Fisher, said “for most used car buyers, there are only a couple of factors that are taken into account when choosing a car. Reliability is always one of the top priorities. Cars have become increasingly complex, with lots of gadgetry on board, especially on executive models, where buyers expect more and more bang for their buck. Owners of these cars pay over the odds for the premium badge, but our study shows they could also be paying over the odds just to keep the car on the road. It’s a balancing act for used car buyers. You can get cars that break down less often, but have higher repair bills, or you can buy a car that won’t cost you much when it fails, such as a Renault, but lumbers you with more than a 50% chance of doing so. The one thing you do appear to be able to rely upon is buying Japanese.”

What Car?’s editor in chief, Chas Hallett said “reliability is so important to motorists, especially when times are tough. Japanese car makers really do deliver on reliability and Honda is exceptionally good at this. What will be surprising to many is the fact that several of the more desirable brands did not fare so well regarding reliability, and the cost of their repairs are high. They need to do better.”

My wife currently drives our third used Civic, an 02 Max. We've had an HReg and a PReg previously and I cannot speak more highly of their free revving reliable petrol engines. The HReg did three trips across Europe while we worked in Italy. The journeys were remarkably comfortable as have been subsequent trips around the UK in the PReg. The colleague who bought it from me loves it and still talks to me! They are easy to service and I do oil change, oil and air filters and sparkplugs. My biggest expense has been the cam belts at 60000miles in all of them. They are no more boring to drive as the driver you are. Drop a gear, use the revs and you can have some fun!

I own 2 Hondas, an 11 year old Civic and a 10 year old CRV; 150k miles and 140k miles and apart from wear and tear items, they have been very reliable. I was keen to replace my Civic with either a Celica or 3 series coupe, but after reading this, I will plump for the Celica!

I've had a BMW 5 series since 2000 and it was made in '96. It's done close to 200'000 miles and in the beginning it had a few issues but these seem to appear when using BMW garages for maintenance. Once I started using my reliable family friends pro garage for servicing the car has been far more reliable and less likely to break down. He actually resolves problems where as BMW just slap you with large bills for parts you probably never needed because they don't solve problems and just stiff you for cash. Also, it still purrs like a kitten, smooth as a babies bum and quiet as a mouse when driving. Would never give that up. I did by a Toyota verso as a work horse and for the kids, buts it's not thrilling to drive and definitely not quiet but it does the job. As with any car, keep them well serviced and they will do you well, don't service them and pay the price.

I have owned a Toyota Celica now for over three years and she's fifteen this year. She's beautiful and reliable, what more could you want?
