Hundreds of workers at Minis Oxford plant are to be axed this week. Most are on temporary contracts and will not be eligible for redundancy pay-offs.
Mini orders have slumped due to the recession; sales were down by 35 percent in January. The UK motor industry is already in turmoil with Bentley, Rolls Royce, and Jaguar Landrover all cutting jobs at UK factories and now German owner BMW will announce 850 job losses at the car makers Cowley site.
Mini celebrates its 50th anniversary in August this year. Orders have slumped due to the recession and 300 Friday night workers were laid off last month. It was also reported that seven day a week working will end leaving productions lines idle over the weekends.
The 2.3 billion rescue package that was announced by the government for car makers is too little too late as union leaders warned earlier this year.
