The McLaren 12C Spider... I want it. End of subject. Why? Because this forthcoming
convertible is the open-top version of the McLaren MP4-12C - one of the most thrilling,
hard-core, and enticing machines ever to melt the tarmac. The McLaren 12C Spider is
based on the super-stiff carbon fibre MonoCell chassis found in its sibling, but that is all
we know this far from its launch. However, we expect the handling to be sharper than
a needle dipped in vinegar, the styling more imposing than a Challenger Tank, and the
acceleration fiercer than a boxer. It should, as such, be one the finest cars of its time.
After all, Ron Dennis – the legendary Formula 1 maestro - is Chairman of McLaren
Automotive.
As the McLaren 12C Spider is an enigma for now, we must look for precedent to access
its likely attributes. That, of course, comes in the form of the MP4-12C. This 3.8-litre V8
powered predator produces 592bhp and 442lb ft of torque, and charges to 62mph in
3.3 seconds. Top speed is 205mph. Wow. Furthermore, this beast has parking sensors,
cruise control, Bluetooth, electric windows, and a 144-litre boot – so it is fairly easy to
live with everyday. Not that its price is everyday, as it costs a bank-busting £168,500. I
suspect the 12C Spider will cost a little more, and have a slightly slower top speed. Either
way, I want it.
