Toyota is introducing new versions of the RAV4 SUV and Yaris supermini in January.

The RAV4 XT-R is expected to become the top-selling car in its range - based on the existing XT4, it has extra equipment in the form of 17" six-spoke alloy wheels, a chrome grille, a front underbody protection plate, a tyre repair kit (replacing the spare wheel), rear parking sensors, unique interior trim and Bluetooth hands-free phone operation.

There are three versions: a 2.0 VVT-i petrol with five-speed manual transmission costing £19,995; the same but with a four-speed automatic for £21,095; and a 2.2-litre D-4D turbo diesel six-speed manual for £21,425.

The Yaris TR, meanwhile, is based on the T3, and comes as standard with 15" alloy wheels, air-conditioning, nine airbags, a six-speaker audio with digital file playback and steering wheel-mounted controls, body-coloured doorhandles and exterior mirrors and leather trim for the steering wheel and gearknob.

Choices between 1.3-litre petrol and 1.4-litre turbo diesel engines, three- and five-door body shapes and conventional manual and MultiMode clutchless manual gearboxes give a total of eight models. Prices range from £9895 for the 1.3 three-door manual to £11,895 for the 1.4 five-door MultiMode diesel.
