New Vauxhall Insignia Pictures

Vauxhall has issued pictures of the car that will replace the Vectra. The Insignia will be officially launched at the British International Motor Show in July. Initially, the five-seat car will come as hatchback and a saloon. From the side, the body has a coupe-like profile, while the sweeping design of the lights is enhanced by the radiator grille, which includes the redesigned Vauxhall badge. There's also a distinctive moulded 'blade' running along the side of the car from behind the front wheels.

Inside the moulding of the top of the dashboard wrapping around into the doors to create a 'wing' shape that the company says embraces the passengers. There will also be ambient lighting to lend the cabin an air of luxury. Vauxhall is also keen to emphasise the technology in its new car, pointing to the new headlights as just one example. These feature the latest Adaptive Forward lighting system, which has nine different settings that automatically adjust themselves to the conditions.

The car will be available with both front- and four-wheel drive, with the proactive Adaptive 4x4 system designed to distribute torque between the wheels both to ensure high levels of traction and to give what Vauxhall calls dynamic handling. The car is expected to go on sale towards the end of this year when it will be available with five engines and the choice of manual or automatic transmissions. The three petrol engines range from a four-cylinder 140PS unit to a V6 with 260PS, and they will be joined by two versions of the 2.0-litre turbodiesel, with 130 or 160PS. In due course, the line-up will be topped and tailed with low-CO2 Ecoflex engines as well as higher-performance units.
