One in ten Hondas to be hybrids by 2010

Hybrid cars will account for 10% of Honda's total global sales by 2010, president Takeo Fukui announced this week.

Besides the Civic Hybrid currently on sale, Honda is to launch a small sports hybrid based on the CR-Z concept (first seen at the Tokyo Motor Show) and, in 2009, the so-called 'Global Hybrid', a relatively low-cost small car.

Production of 200,000 Global Hybrids a year is planned, with half of these going to the US. This car will be a standalone model, not a hybrid version of a conventional production car, and it will have a newly developed, lightweight and compact electrically-assisted powertrain.

Honda is also to begin leases of its FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicle next summer, and it hasn't forgotten about diesel: its second-generation self-developed diesel engine will arrive in European-market cars next year, with sales in North America a year later.
