Personalised Registrations

Buying a personalised registration number can be quite a complex matter

Buying a personalised registration number can be quite a complex matter. As well as buying a ‘new’ unissued registration number direct from DVLA Personalised Registrations, you can also buy from a registration number dealer or from a motorist in a private sale.

Private dealers sell unissued registration numbers bought from DVLA Personalised Registrations; they also act as an agent for motorists who want to sell their registration number. If you purchase a ‘new’ unissued registration number you will receive a certificate of entitlement known as a V750. If you buy a previously issued registration number you will receive a retention document naming you as the ‘nominee’.

You can buy from a motorist who wants to sell a personalised registration that is on their vehicle, you will need to provide the seller with your registration certificate and mot certificate if it requires one. If the personalised registration is held on a certificate of entitlement or retention document your name will be added as the ‘nominee’ and then you need to assign the personalised registration to the vehicle yourself.

You’ll need to go to a registered number plate supplier to get new number plates for your vehicle. The registered supplier will need proof of your identity, as well as proof that the registration number belongs to you.
