Prestigious Car Repair Bills Rocket

Owners of prestigious and performance cars pay twice as much for repairs as those with everyday machinery, according to Warranty Direct. As such, the insurance specialist has revealed that the average recent cost of a breakdown across its 50,000 live polices was £325.25. This included parts and labour. However – during the last twelve months – the average claim for prestigious and performance car repairs hit £634.18. This, in part, was due to the price of labour which has reached a new high. Warranty Direct therefore found that the average cost of a mechanic’s time is now £82.86 per-hour; with a high of £201.60.

Warrant Direct therefore has a few horror stories. A Range Rover Vogue, for starters, had problems with its injectors and turbocharger. As such the engine was replaced along with the turbo. The owner then received a bill for £12,998.46 which must be one of the highest on record. Elsewhere, a BMW 740 Sport required a cylinder block and an Audi Quattro TDI had problems with its engine. These repairs cost £10,170.40 and £9,016.45, respectively.

Warranty Direct Managing Director, Duncan McClure Fisher, revealed: “Owners of luxury or sports cars are, by definition, able to afford something a bit less ordinary than the everyday runabouts. But in reality who can really afford bills that run into several thousands to repair their car?” Mr McClure Fisher continued: “Parts for prestige models will always cost more than those for regular vehicles but you still have to account for labour which is often also more expensive if you are using a prestige manufacturer dealership.”
