Revealed: Britain's Fastest Commutes

Official figures highlight the places where it should still be a pleasure to drive to work

The average speed that peak-time commuters are able to travel on the UK’s A roads is now only 24mph, according to new Government figures.

A combination of increases in traffic on the A road network and increased levels of rainfall are being blamed for reductions in average road speeds in both July and September, when the UK’s roads were respectively 2.3% and 1.9% slower than the same months last year. Records are not taken in August.

But there is some good news… if you are prepared to relocate.

Using the latest data from the Department for Transport, we have produced a list of 10 places where peak-time commuters are most likely to be able to travel at the maximum legally permitted speed.
