Seven of the best car games

Are any of your family’s favourites missing?

At some point in a driver’s life, he or she will have to go on a long journey with a car full of kids complaining “are we there yet?”

What happens when the batteries in the iPad – and patience - run out? Here are seven of our favourite games for making long journeys with the family less troublesome.

Alphabet Game

Try and find a registration plate starting with each letter of the alphabet, in order, beginning with ‘a’. Make things even harder and try to do the same but with models of cars. If you get bored of cars, why not try listing types of food instead.

Think Quick

There are numerous variations of this game, but the basic rules are that each person takes it in turn to say a word relating to an agreed topic, such as animals, colours or girls names. The idea is to go around in a circle and come up with a word. However, if a player takes too long to come up with a word or repeats one previously said, they are eliminated. The winner is the last person standing (or sitting). The game can be made even more difficult by adding a rule that the next word has to begin with the last letter of the previous word.

No list of car games would be complete without this classic. Most people think that the game is just for kids, but adults can have just as much fun playing it too. Just make sure the object which is being spied can be seen at all times, otherwise it will cause arguments.

Car Bingo

This is a very easy game which even the younger members of the family can get involved with. Get each player to pick a different colour of car. The winner shouts BINGO when they have spotted 10 of their coloured cars. People who are particularly good at this game tend to know that there are lots of white, red, silver and black cars on the road, but no so many which are finished in pink.

Storytelling

This is a great game when there are a few people in the car. The idea of the game is to tell a story, with each player only saying one word at a time. The game can last a few minutes or a few hours depending on the imagination of the people in the car.

People Watching

If you’re stuck in traffic, or on your own, then this game is a good one. Have a look at the people around you in other cars and make up stories about their lives, the more imaginative the better. Try not to stare.

Yellow Car

For this game you don’t need to have much imagination, just be really observant. Pick a colour of car which is fairly rare, like yellow, and then make it a competition between other players in the car as to who can spot that colour car first. The same game can be played with rare makes of car as well.

Of course it goes without saying that drivers need to focus on the road at all times.
