Skoda Yeti Makes Long Awaited Debut

The Skoda Yeti is a confusing concoction. The dictionary states 'yeti' is another term for 'abominable snowman' – but Skoda claim it is a 'crossover vehicle' combining the strength of a 4x4 with the practicality of a hatchback.

Whatever the definition this frosty enigma comes with a choice of five engines. The 1.2-litre and 1.8-litre petrols produce 105 and 160bhp respectively – and the 2.0-litre diesel is available with three outputs of 110, 140, and 170bhp. My preference is the largest diesel which reaches 62mph in 8.4 seconds and returns a combined average of 46.3mpg.

To compliment the wide choice of engines, the Yeti is available with front-wheel or four-wheel drive in E, S, SE, and Elegance trim. Standard equipment includes electric front windows, CD player, multiple air bags, and air conditioning to stop the vehicle melting. However, the most intriguing feature is the optional parallel 'park assist'.

Skoda claim this system is ideal for parking quickly and accurately. To operate it simply press 'park assist' and cruise slowly past prospective bays. Sensors then measure the gaps and inform the motorist when the system finds a suitable target. The driver then engages reverse, controls the speed, and the abominable snowman steers into the bay. The system is deactivated if the driver touches the steering or exceeds 4mph.
