Used Mercedes-Benz S Class Review
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class may be one of the finest luxury saloons ever produced
The Mercedes-Benz S Class may be one of the finest luxury saloons ever produced, but used examples are listed with Motoring.co.uk's 'buy safe' sellers for comparatively modest sums. In fact, three year old examples are available from only £35,000. So, what do those who favour the finer things in life get for their money?
The current Mercedes-Benz S-Class comes with a range of engines that are teamed with automatic transmission. A sensible choice is the S320L CDI diesel, as this 3.0-litre 227bhp variant averages 34mpg and hits 60mph in 7.3 seconds. Alternatively, those with a seriously heavy right foot may prefer the astonishing S65L Bi-Turbo. This 6.0-litre V12 monster produces 602bhp and rockets to 60mph in 4.3 seconds, and on to 155mph. Wow!
The Mercedes S-Class is taking on the best from Jaguar and BMW, so the handling and ride must be exceptional. Good news, they are.
This luxury limousine feels totally secure as it wafts over the bumps, and it is amazingly comfortable. These characteristics complement the excellent body control and the inspiring traction, so despite weighing nearly two tonnes the S-Class can be enthusiastically thrown into corners. However, its real forte is effortless cruising.
Now, motorists fortunate enough to enjoy this reliable and safe saloon benefit from an extremely high specification. All models feature double glazing, soft closing doors, and step-less doors that can be held open at any angle. High-spec models also get an electric garage door opener, television tuner, digital radio, and the 'key-less go' package. Perhaps it can make the tea too.
The S-Class is an icon of quality German engineering. It goes into battle against some of the world's most prestigious marques and matches – and in some cases beats – the very best they have to offer. So, long live the magnificent Mercedes S-Class.
