Cheer or cry? Why? Because the Land Rover Defender has been upgraded. On one hand,
some motorists cheer for the optional new stereo system. This includes a one-hundred
and fifty watt low profile sub-woofer and ten centimetre coaxial speakers. The optional part
leather seats could raise a smile too, particularly as they have the Land Rover logo on the
backrests. And yes, the optional roof finishes - Santorini Black, Indus Silver, Orkney Grey
and Firenze Red - add a certain something, particularly mixed with the two new bodywork
colours. These are Barolo Black and Havana, both of which look smart. Happy days, then?
Perhaps... but these extras might make some motorists cry too. Why? Because the
Land Rover Defender has not historically been loaded with fancy equipment.
It has been
uncompromisingly tough, tremendous over the rough stuff, and totally unpretentious. It has
been a stripped-out hard-core workhorse loved by those not interested in gadgets. That
explains why it is still available without air-bags, a CD player, and air-conditioning. These
fancy toys have, therefore, been reserved for the Land Rover Discovery and Range Rover.
So, cheer or cry? Logically the fancy radio, leather seats, and new colourings are
enhancements that should be praised like a well behaved child. They improve the vehicle,
after all - at least on paper. But somehow their presence reminds me a 1960s Ford Anglia
with sat-nav screwed to the dashboard. Helpful... but out of character. Call me Mr Luddite?
