I have to check, as the press release says that 'the proportions of the CLS Shooting Brake are surprising but clearly those of a coupé'. Are they? It looks like an 'estate' to me. That said, the manufacturer's coupé claim is to be expected. The Shooting Brake is, after all, the more spacious version of the CLS four-door coupé. As such - whatever its classification - the CLS Shooting Brake looks tremendous. It is certainly one of the most striking load- luggers on the market and it has fantastic handling, a smooth ride, and plenty of gadgets.

That brings us to the boot.

The Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake's cargo capacity is 590-litres, increasing to 1,550-litres when the rear seats are folded flat. To put that in perspective, the Ford Focus Estate's capacities are 476-litres and 1,502-litres – so the Shooting Brake is spacious but not vast. Power comes courtesy of two diesel engines, the 2.143-litre four-cylinder 204hp unit and the 2.987-litre 265hp six-cylinder. These propel this estate – sorry coupé – to 62mph in 7.8 and 6.6 seconds respectively, and average 53.3 and 47mpg. What we have, then, is a reasonably spacious, strikingly attractive, fast and fuel efficient load-lugger.
