The new Jaguar XJ 3.0 Diesel Luxury is making executive saloon lovers drool like hungry labradors. This latest incarnation of the legendary XJ is a radical departure from its predecessor in terms of style, capability, and feel. It represents a deliberate break from the past and is a clear attempt to appeal to a younger demographic.

The XJ 3.0 Diesel Luxury may only be the entry level model, but even this has a list price of 53,900 or 56,900 for the long wheelbase variant. For this eyebrow raising price motorists benefit from the 271bhp V6 engine that propels the five meter XJ to 60mph in 6.2 seconds. Top speed is a highly credible 155mph which is excellent for a vehicle that returns a combined average of 40mpg.

Now, it goes without saying that the new Jaguar XJ 3.0 Diesel Luxury has exceptional handling. Despite the sheer bulk it feels nimble and eager to please and the noteworthy body control and precise steering inspire confidence.

The ride is also impressively smooth so this aluminium bodied beauty is as comfortable as it is capable. It is certainly a match for the mighty Mercedes S-Class.

Standard XJ 3.0 Diesel Luxury equipment includes six-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift, dynamic stability control, and the electric parking brake with automatic drive-away release. It also has cruise control, rear parking sensors, and a power boot lid for effortless access to the 520-litre storage area. Options include the 430 key-less entry system and the 2,000 Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system for wealthy music lovers.

The Jaguar XJ 3.0 Diesel Luxury is clearly a highly accomplished vehicle that - thanks to its prestige, handling characteristics, and probable reliability - deserves to sell in copious numbers. Okay, so I'll miss the traditional lines of the previous XJ but it was necessary for Jaguar's long term credibility to completely reinvent their top of the range model. The King is dead long live the King.
