Becoming an Approved Driving Instructor
Becoming an Approved Driving Instructor can be extremely rewarding – but rather challenging.
Becoming an Approved Driving Instructor can be extremely rewarding – but rather
challenging. For example, you must pass three Driving Standards Agency tests: the
theory, the driving ability assessment, and the test of instructional ability. During 2009/10,
only thirty-four per-cent of applicants passed the instructional element. Furthermore, tests
two and three must be completed within two years of passing the theory examination.
As a qualified instructor you will be expected to show: high regard for all aspects of
road safety, high standards of driving and instructional ability, and a responsible attitude
towards the pupils and profession. Furthermore, beneficial personal qualities include:
patience, understanding, an ability to relate to a variety of people, and business sense.
The Driving Standards Agency maintains a list of Approved Driving Instructors. It is illegal
to charge for tuition without being included. Anyone can potentially join, assuming they:

- hold a full UK, European Union, or European Economic Area unrestricted car driving licence
- have held the car driving licence for at least four out of the past six years before joining the register
- have not been disqualified from driving - at any time - in the four years before joining the register
- are 'fit and proper' to have their name on the register. Considerations include motoring convictions and criminal records.
