How to Get a Number Plate Made
Number plates must conform to the standards defined by law, e.g. typeface, size, colour, etc. As such they should only be produced by registered number plate suppliers. These can be found online at www.direct.gov.uk. Before manufacturing the plates the supplier needs to see proof of your identity, plus confirmation that you have the legal right to display the registration. Therefore, take at least one item from each of the following lists:

Proof of identity:

  • driving licence,
  • utility bill (issued within the last six months),
  • bank or building society statement (issued within the last six months),
  • passport,
  • national identity card,
  • debit or credit card,
  • police warrant card,
  • armed forces identity card.
Proof of registration entitlement:
  • vehicle registration certificate,
  • new keeper supplement (V5C/2 or V5C/2NI),
  • certificate of registration entitlement (V750 or V750NI),
  • retention document (V778),
  • tax disc renewal reminder or SORN (V11 or V11NI),
  • temporary registration certificate (V379 or V379NI),
  • number plate authorisation certificate (V948) with an official stamp from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA), or Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA),
  • letter of authorisation from a fleet operator quoting the document reference number from the registration certificate (log book).
