Used 4x4 for sale
There is so much choice in the used four wheel drive market now that there is something to please nearly everybody. But not all cars that have SUV looks are actually four-wheel drive. Models like the Ford Kuga, the Nissan Qashqai and Juke and even the Land Rover Evoque and Freelander have both conventional two wheel drive versions and all wheel drive versions. Buyers need to be aware of this growing trend, with even the new model BMW X5 now sporting a non-4x4 model, which is designated the S-drive. (Note S not X-Drive)
SUVs are great family cars, with the space of a big estate, extra legroom and plenty of room in the back for all the stuff that comes with a growing family. Plus, they look pretty good too, so what's not to like. Fuel economy of older models can be a problem, with petrol versions of X3 and X5 being ones to avoid, along with the petrol Range Rover Sport and the Vogue. That is unless you own a bank. Used prices reflect the extra cost of fuel though, so if you are not travelling a lot of miles a week, work out what the extra fuel will cost you and bag a bargain. You might be able to buy a car that is a few years newer than its diesel equivalent for the same price.
There is a growing trend for 4x4s to shrink into even smaller versions. The Nissan Qashqai was probably the first to 'crossover' into the mainstream. Priced at a similar level to a family hatchback at launch, and with 2 and 4 wheel drive options, it sold like hot cakes. Used examples command strong money, and it is a reliable, safe family choice. Newer cars have arrived, like Nissan's own Juke, plus the Vauxhall Mokka, the Renault Captur and the BMW X1, although that looks more like an estate than an SUC.
Fuel economy on newer models shouldn't be an issue. The latest Mercedes ML250 sports combined MPG in the high 40s, as does the new X5. The MINI Countryman can do over 50 MPG and the Mokka even more. With strong residual values and now with fuel economy that is nearly on a par with a conventional family hatch, bags of space, imposing looks and a high driving position, it is now wonder that more and more people are going for used 4x4s and SUVs. Will you join them?
