Fiat is a brand worth more than the sum of its parts. Okay, it has produced a few nice cars over the years - much like most of its competitors – but somehow it is held in higher esteem. Perhaps this is thanks to its fashionable Italian heritage and generally sharp styling. The company's longevity helps too. Prospects include the 2008 Fiat 500. This city car resembles its classic predecessor from the fifties and has unquantifiable charm. Motorists simply love it. The easy to live with handling and in-your-face colours further strengthen its appeal. Prices tend to reflect these credentials. Alternatively, the 2009 Fiat 500 C is the soft-top version that better suits sun worshippers. But this is not a full convertible. It therefore has what could – unkindly – be considered a large, retractable fabric sunroof rather than a fully folding alternative. This set-up keeps production costs low. The final member of the clan is the 2012 Fiat 500L. "L" stands for "large" so it is longer, wider and taller than its siblings. It shares styling cues too, but looks a bit awkward in comparison. But never mind. It is still a nice choice for those that love the image of the smaller city car, but need more room for people and cargo. Time will tell if it proves popular.
And there is more. The 2012 Fiat Panda 4x4 is one of the most capable cars the manufacturer has produced. It is genuinely – and surprisingly – accomplished through off-road terrain that makes more expensive rivals beg for mercy. It climbs like a mountain goat. At its core is the on-demand four-wheel-drive system that incorporates two differentials and an electronically operated coupling. These are governed by a control unit that transfers power between the front and rear axle based on which wheels have traction. This workhorse also has anti-lock brakes which form part of the system that minimises sliding on descents. It has traction control too. Furthermore, in town the steering is precise and the ride comfortable – and the electronics that help master tricky terrain are invaluable when the roads are wet, snowy or icy. This vehicle is fairly rare on the used market, but worth seeking out. The Special Edition Antarctica trim is a particular hoot. Older cars include the 2000 to 2010 Fiat Multipla (multi-purpose vehicle), the 2007 Fiat Bravo (small family class), and the 1995 to 2000 Fiat Coupé. An Italian coupé – how stylish.
