The Land Rover Discovery is more complex than translating encyclopedias into binary. But this vast collection of parts ensures it can charge through extremely rough terrain then waft home like a limousine on normal roads. This remarkable vehicle - that was introduced in 2009 - also sports one of the most fashionable badges in motoring. These factors ensure that in certain forms it costs more than a two-bedroom flat. But like an out of date encyclopedia, some second-hand examples are comparatively cheap. A buyer should check every nut and bolt as this complex machine can cost a small fortune to fix (followed by a big fortune). So, in addition to the standard checks look for signs of off-road use that suggest it has had a hard life. These include scuffs beneath the bodywork, evidence it has been fitted with a winch, and receipts for proper off-road tyres rather than the road-focussed compounds most have. Alternatively, those on more of a budget might prefer an older model. The 1998 to 2004 Discovery is now worth comparatively little money so it can be a bargain. However, serious faults can be very expensive to fix in relation to value so this could be considered a "run until it breaks" car.
The Land Rover Freelander (2003 to 2006) is considerably smaller than its sibling. So, whereas it carries less encyclopedias it compensates by being easier to manoeuvre in town. Parking is simpler too. This fashion statement also has excellent off-road credentials considering its age and price tag. The Freelander 2 (2006 to date), in contrast, is even more capable and has smoother styling. This is reflected by the price tag. But Land Rover's most legendary vehicle is the Defender which looks like it was launched when encyclopedias were printed on parchment. And good thing too. This utilitarian workhorse - which is designed to romp through fields more than excel on-road - is a no-nonsense breath of fresh air. Who cares that it lacks the refinement of its siblings? This thing feels special, lasts forever, and is a tremendous workhorse. There are a reasonable number available on the second-hand market that - even when old and covered in bits of farm - command a few thousand pounds. More luxurious alternatives include the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and Range Rover Evoque each of which cost a fortune before depreciation takes a bite. Exact figures can only be expressed in binary.
