Used MPVs for sale

It used to be really easy to define what an MPV was. There was the Renault Espace and the Ford Galaxy, a few lookalikes and that was it. 7 seats, not bad looking but fairly utilitarian, lots of cup-holders and folding things. Then came the mid-sized challengers like the Renault Scenic, which spawned competitors like the Ford C-Max and the Citroen Picasso, with 5 seats and with even more cubby holes and modern gadgets. There is the Vauxhall Meriva, with its own person radio points, the B-Max which has doors so wide you can actually dive right through them and the Vauxhall Agila, which is frankly too small to be an MPV.

Peugeot got in on the mini-MPV act with the 1007 with its silly sliding door and then quietly dropped the model from its range, sensibly moving to larger models like the 3008, 5008 et al. Even Mercedes-Benz got caught up in the MPV frenzy, bringing out the A-Class which was half small people-carrier and half hatchback (but is now a fully fledged normal hatchback), the B- Class which does a pretty good job of being a family car and the R-Class which wanted to be a 4x4, an MPV and a Sport Tourer and failed to live up to much at all.

So the point is that the 'people carrier' is not so defined any more. A lot of consumers are switching to SUVs, some of which are just better-looking, some of which are more functional with 4 wheel drive systems. So there are now bargains to be had when buying a family-lugger, with the premium that used to be attached to used examples eroding. Three year old examples used to be £8,000 to £10,000 pounds or more for many models, but you can now buy a 3 year old 7-seater Vauxhall Zafira for under £6000, or a C-Max for £7000. If you are looking for practicality rather than the latest style, these cars are great value for money. Reliable, functional, tested. You won't necessarily win admiring glances or wolf whistles, but you will get from A to B without any fuss, with happy kids, ( if you buy them sweets and an in-car DVD player) and without a big hole in your pocket.
