Used Volvo for sale
Official: Volvo is a paragon of middle-class respectability. Its estates, after all, have been taking "professionals" to the theatre, on pick-nicks in the county, and for holidays in the Lake District since the dawn of time. And guess what? The Volvo V70 (2007 onwards) is now relatively affordable on the second-hand market. Strengths include the cavernous boot that - on certain models - can be accessed via a powered tailgate and incorporates a system for securing cargo. That is cargo such as middle-class cucumber sandwiches, of course. As this is an estate, a buyer should check for signs of a hard life such as a wrecked cargo area and crippled suspension. This workhorse is also available in XC70 form which has slightly higher ground clearance and four-wheel-drive. Perfect for towing a horse box and bouncing through fields en-route to a posh country hotel. Such strengths - particularly for recent well maintained examples - are reflected in the second-hand prices. In contrast, the manufacturer's old estates can be picked-up for virtually nothing. Highlights include the Volvo 940 Estate (1990 to 1998) and the 850 (1993 to 1997). Young classics such as the 760 (1982 to 1990) also have a timeless charm.
Official: Volvo has produced sleek saloons too. These include the S80 (1998 to 2005) which is a comfortable, luxurious, middle-class lifestyle statement. It is the big traditional Volvo for those that do not require a large estate. This vehicle is now getting knocking-on a bit, so the second-hand prices are low considering its credentials. These were, however, eclipsed by the later generation that was launched in 2006 then revised in 2009 and 2013. The price of properly maintained late examples reflect the confident handling and fashionable badge - so wannabe buyers might have to forgo the odd cucumber sandwich to afford it. Volvo has also produced traditional four-wheel-drives such as the XC60 (2008 to date) and XC90 (2002 to date). These have a commanding presence and - unlike some vehicles from their classes - excel both on and off road. These complement sports cars such as the C70 Coupe, C70 Convertible, and C30 Coupe. Furthermore, the manufacturer recently launched one of the most socially responsible cars on the planet. Why? Because the 2012 V40 has an air-bag that emerges from beneath its bonnet to cover the windscreen and front pillars. This then protects any pedestrians unlucky enough to be struck. The V40 is fairly rare on the used market, but the air-bag plus its other qualities ensure it is worth seeking out. Who wants a sandwich?
