Volkswagen is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Volkswagen Transporter.
Volkswagen is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Volkswagen Transporter. The Volkswagen Transporter first went into production in March 1950 and inspired so much affection over the years it has achieved the status of a cult car. Since then, Volkswagen vans, from the original T1 to today's T5, have become legendary and put to a wide spectrum of uses by commercial customers, as holiday campervans, people carriers, and most famously as the cool transport of choice for the flower-power generation and the surfing community. The Volkswagen transporter, Kombi or van is remembered with possibly more affection than any other motor vehicle, largely because of its reliability, engaging looks and irrefutable practicality. The original Volkswagen Transporter had a 1.1 litre engine producing 25bhp; the current range that is available can achieve 178bhp. It’s impossible to know if any variation of the Volkswagen Transporter will still be around in 60 years time. If it is it will certainly have changed a lot. Perhaps it will be completely eco-friendly. As long as it has some of the individuality and charm of the original Transporter people will buy it.
