Along comes the Audi R8 Spyder
Given the massive success of the Audi R8 there is no doubt the Audi R8 Spyder will follow suit
Given the massive success of the Audi R8 there is no doubt the Audi R8 Spyder will follow suit. The Audi R8 Coupe has a six month waiting list despite just going on sale; the Audi R8 Spyder drop top has a twelve month waiting list.
Under the bonnet is the same V10 engine as the Coupe which is capable of 0-60mph in 4.1 seconds and has a top speed of 194mph. The roof retains much of the same roof lines as the Coupe and transformation from open to closed takes just nineteen seconds. Audi claims, with the roof up, the Audi R8 Spyder's interior is nearly as quiet as the coupé's at 130 km/h.
The R8 Spyder introduces worlds-first hands-free voice technology. The automaker's sewn three tiny microphones into each seatbelt (a fourth is mounted on the windshield frame), making Bluetooth phone conversations, even with the top down on the highway, a reality. The convertible's cockpit carries over virtually unchanged from its coupe sibling. As before, Audi’s reputation for industry-leading interior design and quality hold true. Stitched leather or carbon-fibre can be had on virtually any surface. A flat bottom steering wheel and navigation with Audi's MMI system to control a myriad of features are standard, while a Bang & Olufsen sound system is optional. Rear visibility is never a strong suit in any mid-engine car, but at least the Audi R8 Spyder's aft view is virtually unchanged top up or down. Prices range from £112,500 to £117,700.
