Are you paying too much for your MOT?

Save pounds with our handy guide

Many motorists are unaware that the Government sets a maximum level for the amount garages can charge for an MOT, or Ministry of Transport test. If you own a car with up to eight seats, then you should be paying no more than £54.85.

The good news for motorists is that there’s no minimum charge for an MOT and garages are quite often keen to compete for your business.

Research conducted by found there are vast differences in the amounts being charged for an MOT – and some decent savings to be had.  Discounted deals could save you as much as £35.85 on the maximum price.

But be careful. There can often be strings attached, so read the small print carefully.

Here are the prices we found:

  • Online - £19, if bought with a full service
  • High street auto – £20, if bought with a full service (KwikFit)
  • High street auto - £29.95, if bought without a full service (Halfords).

Prepare before the MOT

Nearly 40% of cars fail the MOT test and will need some work done in order to secure a pass certificate. There are some things you should check yourself before taking the car for the test, including checking that your windscreen wipers and lights are working properly.

It’s also worth noting that there are certain circumstances in which you may be able to have a partial re-test for free, or at least a reduced MOT fee.

They include leaving the vehicle with the garage which conducted the test for repairs, or returning to the garage before the end of the next working day having attended to a number of specific items
