Bentley Works Its Magic on Mulsanne Speed
Faster And More Fuel Efficient Engine For Flagship Saloon
Bentley has managed to squeeze even more magic out of its Mulsanne, declaring the new Speed version of the saloon to be the “world’s fastest ultra-luxury driving experience”.
The standard Mulsanne’s 6.75-litre twin turbocharged V8 petrol engine has been tweaked to make the Speed faster and more fuel efficient.
Due to be seen in public for the first time at the Paris Motorshow, the Mulsanne Speed is capable of hitting 62mph from a standing start in only 4.9 seconds, boasts 530bhp and has a top speed of 190mph.
The standard 505bhp Mulsanne does the 0 to 62mph sprint in 5.3 seconds and has a top speed of 184mph.
The Speed’s engine has performance-focussed inlet ports, fuel injectors, spark plugs and compression ratio. These complement its revised variable valve timing and turbochargers. Power is sent to the rear wheels via eight speed transmission which enables the driver to either cruise in fully automatic mode, or select the gears manually via paddles behind the steering wheel.
It also incorporates “s” mode that keeps the engine revolutions above 2,000rpm where the turbochargers have more influence.
Bentley says that engine modifications have made the Mulsanne more economical to run. It will average 19.3mpg, manages 28.4mpg on the extra-urban cycle and returns 12.4mpg in town.
This is partly because the engine only uses half its cylinders when cruising at modest speed.
Bentley Mulsanne Speed chassis, styling and equipment
There are modifications to the chassis of the Bentley Mulsanne Speed too, including a more “driver-focused” Sport mode.
Styling highlights include a dark tint on the radiator grille, lower bumper grilles and wing vents.
There are four new colours: Spectre: (black with gold metallic and a hint of green), Candy Red: (rich and deep), Camel (golden sand with metallic highlights) and Marlin (blue with a hint of green and a metallic finish).
Wolfgang Durheimer, Chairman and Chief Executive of Bentley Motors, said: “The new Mulsanne Speed is the car that defines Bentley, as a flagship for driving luxury performance. Our customers don’t compromise, and we’ve adopted the same approach in the design, engineering and crafting of our new flagship.
“The Mulsanne Speed is distinguished, calm and relaxing, but always with a connection to the road and relentless dynamic performance on demand. In this car, every journey becomes a drive.”
*The Mulsanne Speed will be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show on Thursday 2nd October, and will be available for customer delivery this winter.
