UK’s most popular new cars revealed, latest registration numbers plus the key strengths which make them popular

June 2017 new car registrations confirm that supermini, small family, crossover and compact executive cars remain most popular throughout The United Kingdom. All registrations total 243,454 which is 4.8% fewer than June 2016, The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders says. However, year to date performance “remains strong” at 1,401,811 (- 1.3%). June 2017’s top 10 follows.

Volkswagen Golf – 8,808

The Volkswagen Golf finishes first in June 2017. It is a small, family class, vehicle available in hatchback and estate form. Strengths include a robust feel that suggests it is built to last. Handy for family adventures. The Golf – which has recently been revised - is also the third most popular car of the year (to date).

Ford Fiesta – 8,601

The Ford Fiesta is the most popular car of January, February, March, April and May 2017 but only manages second in June. This newly revised supermini has a range of strengths. Sharp, sure-footed, handling make it entertaining on a twisty road, for example. To date, this hatchback is the best selling model of 2017.

Ford Focus – 8,283

The Ford Focus comes home third in June 2017. This small family class model – which rivals the Volkswagen Golf and comes in hatchback and estate form – blends pleasing looks, family practicality and confident handling with a fair price tag. Such qualities also make it the second most popular car of 2017; so far.

Vauxhall Astra – 6,977

The Vauxhall Astra crosses the line fourth. It is a small family class workhorse that comes as a hatchback and estate. Strengths include the excellent equipment specification. Highlights include a massage seat that soothes your aches after a busy day at work. It has a router, too. The Astra is the sixth most popular car of 2017.

MINI – 6,630

The MINI manages fifth spot in June 2017. A fashionable image – which is boosted by the longevity and popularity of its classic predecessors - is among this supermini class vehicle’s key strengths. It is loved by rich and poor, young and old, men and women. This hatchback is the ninth most registered car of the year.

Vauxhall Corsa – 5,739

The Vauxhall Corsa is a supermini and the sixth most popular car of June 2017. Expect a hatchback body style, extremely low running costs, and compact proportions that make it easy to park in busy cities to grab a coffee. Year to date figures confirm it is also the fifth most frequently registered new vehicle of 2017 (to date).

Nissan Qashqai – 5,103

The New Nissan Qashqai finishes seventh and is a crossover class vehicle. It is, in fact, the best selling crossover. Strengths include robust, off-road, styling and high ground clearance that make it easier to get in and out. Year to date registrations confirm that this workhorse is the fourth most popular car of 2017. 

Volkswagen Polo – 4,705

The Volkswagen Polo takes eighth position in June 2017. This supermini class hatchback is among the most accomplished in its class. It lists sure-footed handling, low running costs – very low in certain forms - and a quality feel which suggests longevity among its qualities. It is the eighth most popular car of the year.

BMW 3 Series – 4,264

The BMW 3 Series is a compact, executive class, vehicle and the most popular prestige model of June 2017. It finishes ninth overall. Strengths include a fashionable badge, choice of saloon or estate, sporty handling and potent performance in certain forms. Despite such qualities, it is not among the top 10 sellers of 2017.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class – 4,102

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is the tenth most registered new car of June 2017. It is a 3 Series rival and shares many of its credentials. It arguably has a slightly more mature image, though. Choose either saloon or estate to suit. The year to date registrations confirm it is the seventh most popular model of 2017.
