MINI Could Claim Coveted Motoring Title
Rule Britannia. The MINI - which is built in Great Britain – has been short-listed for the World Car of the Year Title 2014 . Naturally, that is one of the most prestigious motoring accolades on the planet so victory could further boost the vehicle's popularity/sales. But it must first overcome the other candidates that include a high percentage of Japanese, German and American vehicles. These include the Lexus IS (compact executive saloon), the BMW i3 (fully electric supermini) and the Ford Mondeo/Fusion (large family car). South Korean and French manufacturers also have a strong presence with the Hyundai i10 (city car) and the Peugeot 308 (small family car). The MINI Hatchback – and its numerous siblings – are built at the Oxford Plant which is the oldest mass-production car plant in the country, and the second oldest in the world. As such, it has manufactured more than eleven million units for fourteen car companies since it opened in 1913. These include more than two-million modern MINIs and more than six-hundred thousand classic models.
Word Car Of The Year 2014 Explained
The World Car of the Year Awards was launched in 2004 to recognise automotive excellence on an international scale. It is dedicated to performing this task with the “utmost objectivity, credibility, and integrity.” Awards are administered by a non-profit association under the guidance of a Steering Committee that has members from Asia, Europe and North America. Vehicles are evaluated – and later voted for over two rounds – by an jury of journalists from across the globe. Each is appointed based on his/her expertise, experience, credibility and influence. The 2014 jurors include Joshua Dowling who contributes to Top Gear magazine in Australia, and Michael Bettencourt from Canada who writes for MSN Autos. Voting will commence on February 4th and the winner will be announced at the New York International Auto Show on April 18th 2014. To qualify for consideration, a car must be available on at least two continents within a specified period.
