New electric car scheme to be launched in Paris
It has been announced by the Mayor of Paris that a new electric car scheme will be launched by the name of Autolib.
There is a very successful bicycle sharing scheme in the city by the name of Velib and the installation of a massive electric car sharing scheme is the next step.
Thousands of pay as you go electric cars will be made available and will be located throughout the city. Users will be able to rent an electric car on the spot and be able to return it to another station. Seven hundred planned pick up and drop off locations will charge a rate per mile. Drivers will have to register with the service and hold a licence.
Autolib should be up and running by late 2009 and will hopefully reduce congestion together with the parking problems that are now faced in most major cities.
