Ferrari's Fernando Alonso has won the Silverstone British Grand Prix.
Ferrari's Fernando Alonso has won the action-packed British Grand Prix. Championship leader, and Red Bull ace, Sebastian Vettel finished second – inches ahead of team mate Mark Webber in third. McLaren's Lewis Hamilton secured fourth in the final corner, as he aggressively resisted the unwanted attention of Ferrari's Felipe Massa. The Englishman's result was impressive as he started tenth and, at times, ran slowly due to a fuel shortage.Starting conditions were challenging as the revised Silverstone circuit was half wet - and half dry. This forced the drivers to run on intermediate tyres which needed to be carefully managed. Sebastian Vettel started second, but passed pole-sitter Mark Webber before turn one. He built a comfortable lead but a pit-stop delay handed Alonso the advantage. McLaren's Jenson Button started fifth but lost places in the opening laps. His race ended prematurely, immediately after a pit stop, as his right-front wheel was loose. The Englishman was forced to park on the pit exit. By contrast, Scotland's Paul Di Resta, who qualified sixth in his first home Grand Prix, finished fifteenth for Force India-Mercedes. Sebastian Vettel now leads the Drivers' Championship with 204 points. Team mate Mark Webber is second with 124, and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso is third with 112. Red Bull-Renault sit pretty in the Constructors' Championship with 328 points, followed by McLaren-Mercedes with 218, and Ferrari with 164. Bring on the next event in Germany.
