Jenson Button overtook Sebastian Vettel on the last lap, after the German driver made an error and ran wide at turn six.The Canadian grand prix started under the safety car after it was deemed unsafe to have a standing start in the soaking wet conditioning. There were numerous casualties in this years Canadian grand prix, including Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. Lewis Hamilton crashed out after having made contact with his team mate Jenson Button on the start finish straight, and ending up in the wall. Fernando Alonso crashed out on lap thirty-seven after contact with Jenson Button at the first chicane made him spin and beach his car on the kerb. There were more retirements to come after the re-start from the Alonso accident, with both Force India’s retiring although Paul Di Resta was classed as eighteenth after crashing out right at the end of the grand prix. Nick Heidfeld retired after crashing into the back of Kamui Kobayashi, and damaging his front wing, which folded under his car and causing him to drive down the run off area. Sebastian Vettel now leads the championship with 161 points, followed by Jenson Button on 101 points, Mark Webber on 94 points and Lewis Hamilton on 85 points.
