There wasn’t much separating Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren in Q1 with all fighting for the fastest time on the ‘hard’ compound tyres. Drivers to drop out of Q1 were Daniel Ricciardo, Vitantonio Liuzzi, Jerome d’Ambrosio, Karun Chandhok, Timo Glock, Heikki Kovalainen and Kamui Kobayashi.Q2 started with Felipe Massa setting the quickest time, only for Lewis Hamilton to beat it by over half a second. The last five minutes of qualifying had all the lower teams fighting to get into Q3, with Adrian Sutil getting into eighth and knocking Nick Heidfeld out of Q3. Drivers to drop out of Q2 were Jaime Alguersuari, Sebastian Buemi, Sergio Perez, Rubens Barrichello, Pastor Maldonado, Paul Di Resta and Nick Heidfeld. Q3 started with Alonso setting the fastest time with a 1:30.866, only to be beat by Hamilton on a 1:30.725, and then for Webber to beat Hamilton’s time on a 1:30.251. Sebastian Vettel could only manage second at the start of qualifying with a 1:30.352. All the top teams pitted there cars and put a fresh set of ‘soft’ tyres on both cars. Mark Webber managed to claim pole for tomorrows race, followed by Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa, Nico Rosberg, Jenson Button, Adrian Sutil, Vitaly Petrov and Michael Schumacher. This is the first race of the 2011 season that Sebastian Vettel won’t start on the front row of the grid.
