Webber Takes Top Spot in Abu Dhabi
Under the setting sun the drivers took to the Yas Marina Circuit for qualifying of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
With Sebastian Vettel having claimed the Championship crown in the last race in India, drivers without a seat for next season were looking to shine.
Nico Rosberg led the way with a 1:42.567, closely followed by team mate Lewis Hamilton who was 0.006 seconds behind. Jenson Button was looking to improve on his average season and got up to third for most of the session.
The Red Bull drivers Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber left it late to head on to the track and when they did both set fastest times, just under one second faster than Hamilton and Rosberg.
With a few minutes remaining Pastor Maldonado and Felipe Massa were looking to get out of the drop zone. The Venezuelan got up to 4th, while the Ferrari driver got up to 2nd.
Out in Q1 were: Esteban Guterriez, Adrian Sutil, Giedo Van Der Garde, Jules Bianchi, Charles Pic, Max Chilton
Times were dropping in Q2 and Rosberg again led the way early on with a 1: 40.473. Fernando Alonso was struggling in his Ferrari and was close to not making it into Q3, languishing down in 12th, while Button was also facing the same problem dropping to 16th. By the end of the session they had both lost out.
Q2 losers were: Fernando Alonso, Paul Di Resta, Jenson Button, Jean- Eric Vergne, Pastor Maldonado, Valterri Bottas
Rosberg was looking at provisional pole in Q3 until he got knocked off the top spot by Vettel.
Sparks flew as Hamilton bumped acroos the kerbs but was still running in 3rd looking to top the times.
A last lap by Mark Webber saw him take pole with 1:39.957. With Hamilton spinning and causing a yellow flag the Australian had no competition for pole position.
