Qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix Formula 1 race took place on the wet streets of Monte Carlo
Jules Bianchi was the first casualty at Massenet bringing out a yellow flag within the first minute as his car was on fire.
Mark Webber set a time of 1:36.529 as Q1 was littered with yellow flags, but Fernando Alonso knocked off nearly two seconds off, for Lewis Hamilton to then knock it even further to 1:32.920.
Pastor Maldonado topped the session with a time of 1:23.452. Felipe Massa crashed in final free practice, so with his car being repaired by the Ferrari team, he failed to make it out.
Out in Q1 were: Paul di Resta, Charles Pic, Esteban Guterriez, Max Chilton
There were more yellow flags in Q2 as the weather conditions only improved slightly for the drivers. With eight minutes to go, Sebastian Vettel was struggling to get out of the drop zone. His fellow German, Nico Rosberg was setting the pace through the session with a 1:22.119. The session was all about tyres and on slicks, Mark Webber knocked nearly three seconds off Rosberg’s time with a 1:19.254, followed by an even quicker time of 1:17.322.
Fernando Alonso just made it through on his last lap, but going out of Q2 were: Nico Hulkenberg, Daniel Ricciardo, Romain Grosjean, Valtteri Bottas, Giedo van der Garde, Pastor Maldonado
The final session got underway in dry conditions with times tumbling as Vettel posted a time of 1:14.333 in a battle with his team mate, Mark Webber.
But it was Mercedes that locked out the front row as Nico Rosberg took pole, with Lewis Hamilton in second. The Red Bull cars of Vettel and Webber took third and fourth.
