Mark Webber Wins the 2012 F1 Monaco Grand Prix

With Mark Webber starting on pole, after Michael Schumacher’s grid penalty from Spain demoting him to sixth, the Australian had a storming start, while chaos ensured behind.

Romain Grosjean had a disaster of a start and after trying to keep Schumacher behind him, ended up banging wheels with a Ferrari and then squeezing the German against the barriers and spinning his Lotus Renault into the path of the following pack.

Due to the nature of the tight circuit, Pastor Maldonado brought out the safety car after losing his front nose to the HRT of Pedro de la Rosa at the first corner. One of the biggest losers from the start was Jenson Button, dropping all the way down to 14th, who then had to do battle with the Caterham of Heikki Kovalainen for 13th.

Lap 9 saw Mark Webber setting fastest lap, leading by 1.3 seconds with only 10 seconds separating the top 10. With Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton in hot pursuit, the Australian would continue to push and extend his lead.

With Kimi Raikkonen struggling with his rear tyres and having to drive defensively to keep Schumacher behind, it was Rosberg that headed into the pits first. The threat of rain hung over the principality and this determined who came into the pits. Sebastian Vettel stayed out to take the lead on the soft tyre, pulling out a gap over his team mate Webber of 15.8 seconds.

Sergio Perez got a drive-through penalty for diving into the pit-lane too late, nearly causing a collision with Raikkonen. Button’s misery continued, and after pitting, he exited side-by-side with Kovalainen, the Finn getting ahead to resume their battle for 13th position.

Vettel eventually pitted on lap 46 and timed it to perfection to get back out ahead of Hamilton and Massa for 4th. Webber resumed the lead, Rosberg and Alonso in 2nd and 3rd with just 5.3 seconds covering the top 6.

Despite being all the way down in 17th, the Sauber of Perez was setting laps, 2.5 seconds quicker than the leaders.

Michael Schumacher started to drop back after having problems with his Mercedes and eventually brought his sick car into the pits on lap 65 to retire from the race.

The anticipated rain eventually arrived and Webber had to control the race from the front in slippery conditions with just 7 laps remaining. Lapping over 5 seconds slower than earlier in the race, Button’s frustration got the better of him and he hit Kovalainen, spinning himself in the process and out of the race.

With only 15 finishers, Mark Webber took his second Monaco GP victory, with Nico Rosberg and Fernando Alonso completing the podium.

The F1 Championship heads to the Gilles Villeneuve circuit for the Canadian GP in two weeks time.
