Practice 1 saw a lot of of teams make aerodynamic changes to their cars. Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes GP being the high profile teams to make to these changes. Mercedes GP driver Nico Rosberg and Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso seemed to report that they were happy with their changes, more worrying though is Mclaren, who made changes and only managed sixth (Hamilton) and 9th (Button), with no news about the aerodynamic updates. The only off of the session was Williams driver Pastor Maldonado, who lost control on the dirty side of the track at turn 13 and ended up in the gravel trap, luckily not causing any damage to the car. Mark Webber went fastest in practice 1, with a time of 1:25.142, second was Sebastian Vettel and third was Mercedes GP driver Nico Rosberg. Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso was fourth fastest, but his team mate Felipe Massa could only manage 16th, this apparently due to him testing some new upgrades.
