Lewis Hamilton was fourth followed by the Renault of Nick Heidfeld, and the Ferrari of Felipe Massa. Sebastian Vettel could only manage sixteenth as Red Bull spent the majority of the morning session testing the new engine settings that will be required in Silverstone when the off-throttle blown diffuser ban comes in to effect. Niko Hulkenberg was out testing Paul Di Resta’s car, but ended up being the first driver to end up in the barriers after losing the rear end of the car in the braking zone for turn twelve. Karun Chandhok took Jarno Trulli’s place in the Lotus, but didn’t end up completing any fast laps after a gear box problem prevented him from taking part in the session. Timo Glock also had a spin at the exit for turn four, but managed to keep it out of the wall. Although this mistake stopped the end of practice while his car was recovered due to an engine stall.
