Ferrari had a great start to the Valencia Grand Prix, with Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa both jumping ahead of Lewis Hamilton to move up to third and fourth respectively.
Ferrari had a great start to the Valencia Grand Prix, with Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa both jumping ahead of Lewis Hamilton to move up to third and fourth respectively. Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button both lost places with Hamilton dropping to fifth from third, and Button dropping to seventh from sixth.Jenson Button managed to pull a fantastic overtaking move on Nico Rosberg on lap six at turn two, diving down the inside of the Mercedes GP driver after braking later. Lewis Hamilton made the first pit stop of the front runners at the end of lap twelve, with Mark Webber following him in on lap fourteen. Lap fifteen saw Vettel, Alonso and Button pit, and Felipe Massa pitting on lap sixteen, the top six drivers all staying on the soft (yellow) compound tyres. Michael Schumacher damaged his front wing just after pitting in a collision with one of the Renault cars, but the stewards deemed it to be a racing incident and did not punish the German driver. Fernando Alonso managed to pass Mark Webber on lap twenty one, with a great move to get down the inside of the Red Bull driver at turn twelve. Lewis Hamilton made his second pit stop of the race at the end of lap twenty-four, and managed to re-emerge in sixth place behind team-mate Jenson Button. Mark Webber pit on lap twenty-nine with Fernando Alonso pitting on lap thirty, this caused Alonso to come out behind the Australian driver, with Red Bull making the under-cut move work well. Felipe Massa pit on lap thirty-three but suffered a long stop after a problem with the wheel gun caused the left rear tyre not to go on the car. Jenson Button reported to his team that his KERS system was broken on lap thirty-five, which may have been due to the system overheating. Lewis Hamilton started to suffer from tyre degradation and was the second driver to switch onto the hard (white) compund tyres after Mark Webber at the end of lap fourty-three. Fernando Alonso pit on lap fourty-four and re-emerged in front of Mark Webber for second place. Sebastian Vettel pit on lap fourty-eight and re-emerged in first place. The top six places didn’t change after all the pit stops, with Sebastian Vettel winning the European Grand Prix, followed by Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber, Lewis Hamilton, Felipe Massa and Jenson Button in sixth.
