Fashion lovers take note. The Fiat 500 1.2 Pop is the most stylish new car available for £9,900. That is everything most people need to know before writing a cheque. After all, the reason the 500 sells is because it attracts admiring glances. It gets you noticed and makes people smile. Quite a contrast to some expensive cars that make motorists resentful. Nobody throws a pile of road rage at the 500, it looks too appealing and friendly. That is just as well. Can you think of any other reason to buy this car? After all, the entry-level Ford Fiesta is cheaper than the Fiat – and has a far larger boot. It is also a supermini, whereas the 500 sits in the lesser city car category. Furthermore, the Volkswagen Polo is available from £9,995 and feels robust enough to outlast time. This is a trend with German cars, whereas Italian designers often put less emphasis on longevity. The Fiat 500 1.2 Pop produces 69bhp, hits 62mph in 12.9 seconds, and averages 58.9mpg. Good stuff, but once again there is competition. The entry-level Nissan Micra – which is cheaper – has similar performance, power, and fuel economy. This supermini also has more toys, including the electronic stability programme and Bluetooth. Throw-in Japanese build quality, two extra doors, and a larger boot and it becomes clear that the Micra is better value. But hey, fashion is rarely practical and the 500 is fantastically stylish.
