Fiat 500L Overview For 2016
Clever seats, space, fuel efficient engines and high equipment specifications make Fiat 500L a capable family car.
Seats and cargo capacity
The Fiat 500L is a compact, multi-purpose, class vehicle that builds on the strengths of its sibling: the ever-popular 500. It inherits characteristics from the city car – notably the exterior styling - but its larger proportions make it a more practical prospect for family motorists. The “L” stands for large, after all.
500L seats move to countless positions to balance the needs of passengers and luggage. The rear seats slide forward and backward, fold flat with a 60/40 split, then tumble into the floor well, for example. The front passenger seat also lies flat to create a table.
Cargo capacity is 400-litres rising to 1,310 with the rear seats folded flat. Also, the boot incorporates a shelf that can be raised/lowered to maximise space, or form compartments to separate fragile items. The 500L also has 22 storage compartments in its cabin – so it is a practical, easy to live with, family workhorse.
Engines, performance, fuel economy and emissions
New Fiat 500L engines consume a modest amount of fuel which minimises expenditure at the pump. This trait also limits carbon emissions, which define the cost of vehicle excise duty (road tax).
Engines include the 1.4-litre, 95hp, petrol that is teamed with 6-speed manual transmission. Expect: 0 - 62mph in 12.8 seconds, average fuel consumption of 46.3mpg and emissions of 143g/km. This power plant can be teamed with the Pop, Pop Star, and Lounge trims.
The 1.3-litre, 95hp, multijet diesel is available with the Pop Star and Lounge trims only. In 5-speed manual form it propels motorists to 62mph in 13.9 seconds (14.8 seconds 5-speed auto), averages 68.9mpg (72.4mpg), and emits carbon at a rate of 107g/km (104g/km).
The 1.6-litre, 120hp, multijet diesel engine is the most powerful in the range and connected to 6-speed manual transmission. Expect: 0 - 62mph in 10.7 seconds, average fuel consumption of 67.3mpg and CO2 of 112g/km. It can be teamed with the Pop Star and Lounge trim.
Trims and equipment
The Fiat 500L has a respectable equipment specification; even its its most basic form. The highest-spec trim is beautifully equipped.
The Pop trim has a: 5” touchscreen radio, electric front windows, tyre pressure monitor, remote central locking, height adjustable driver's seat, 6 airbags, electronic stability control and a leather steering wheel with audio controls. It also has a hill-hold function to prevent it rolling backwards when moving-off on slopes.
The Pop Star trim adds: air-conditioning, cruise control, alloy wheels, electric wing mirrors and chrome insert side mouldings. The Lounge, in contrast, also has: automatic headlights, automatic windscreen wipers, front fog lights, electric rear windows, rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control plus a fixed glass roof.
New Fiat 500L prices range from £13,665 to £20,265.
